Mixed Reality Alebrije Unit
Unit Overview:
This project brings together art, culture, and technology as students design and create their own Alebrijes—fantastical creatures inspired by Mexican folk art—then bring them to life using augmented reality (AR). Through hands-on sculpting, painting, and digital integration, students will explore the relationship between physical and digital making. They’ll develop storytelling skills, learn about cultural traditions, and experiment with emerging technology in an engaging, creative way.
Key Learning Outcomes:
Exploring the cultural significance of Alebrijes and Mexican folk art
Designing and creating a physical model using traditional and upcycled materials
Learning the basics of augmented reality (AR) to bring their creations to life
Experimenting with digital tools to enhance physical artwork
Strengthening storytelling and presentation skills through interactive experiences
