Upcycled Toy Invention Unit

Unit Overview:
Young makers will step into the role of toy designers, exploring creativity, problem-solving, and early engineering concepts to invent their own unique toys. Using accessible materials and simple mechanics, students will learn about movement, cause and effect, and basic design thinking. Through hands-on building and playful experimentation, they’ll develop fine motor skills, spatial reasoning, and the confidence to bring their ideas to life. This unit encourages curiosity and innovation, showing students that anyone can be an inventor.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Understanding basic principles of motion (push, pull, roll, spin)

  • Exploring material properties and how they can be used in toy design

  • Introducing simple construction and assembly techniques

  • Encouraging creative problem-solving and iteration through hands-on making

  • Developing storytelling and presentation skills by sharing their toy inventions
